AISI 1045 steel is characterized by good weldability, good machinability, and high strength and impact properties in either the normalized or hot rolled condition.
1045 is a medium tensile low hardenability carbon steel generally supplied in the black hot rolled or occasionally in the normalised condition, with a typical tensile strength range 570 - 700 Mpa and Brinell hardness range 170 - 210 in either condition.Characterised by fairly good strength and impact properties, plus good machinability and reasonable weldability in the hot rolled or normalised condition.
1018 vs. 1045 Steel Comparison Carbon steel is one of the most widely used materials in the world, and the 1018 and 1045 grades of steel is a big reason for that. One of the most common questions that arise when considering buying cold finished steel products is the difference between 1018 cold steel bars and 1045 cold bars.
What is 1045 Steel? AISI 1045 steel is high-quality medium-carbon steel with high strength. It also can be called JIS S45C and DIN C45 steel. It is usually used in normalized condition because of its bad hardenability. It needs to be quenching and tempering treatment to get higher mechanical performance.
The graph bars on the material properties cards below compare annealed and cold drawn SAE-AISI 1045 to: wrought carbon or non-alloy steels (top), all iron alloys (middle), and the entire database (bottom). A full bar means this is the highest value in the relevant set. A half-full bar means it's 50% of the highest, and so on. Brinell Hardness. 180.
AISI 1045 Steel, cold drawn, high temperature stress relieved, 50-75 mm (2-3 in) round Categories: Metal; Ferrous Metal; Carbon Steel; AISI 1000 Series Steel; Medium Carbon Steel. Material Notes: Respond to heat treatment, and flame and induction hardening, but not recommended for carburizing or cyaniding.
AISI 1045 steel has a low through-hardening capability that recommended for tempering and through-hardening. Carbon steel AISI 1045 is a medium carbon, medium tensile steel supplied as forged or normalized. This steel shows reasonable strength and toughness. 1045 is the designation in both the SAE and AISI systems for this material.
Note the higher concentration of Manganese in 4140 than 1045. Mechanical Properties. Whether a steel is hot rolled or cold drawn determines many of the mechanical properties. The majority of 1045 and 4140 steel is purchased in cold drawn state, but we provided two graphs of both hot rolled and cold drawn mechanical properties for both 1040 and 1045.

General characteristics of Carbon Steel 1045. C1045 is a medium carbon, medium tensile steel supplied as forged or normalized. This steel shows reasonable strength and toughness. C1045 will through harden to 2.5 (63mm) with a tensile strength of 66-120 Ksi (620-850 MPa)
* Values based on Brinell 10mm Standard Ball (3000kgf). ** This conversion calculator gives approximate hardness values for various hardness scales based on the Rockwell C Scale. The Hardness Tensile Strength relations may vary according to the processing history or the chemical composition of the steel.
AISI 1045 is a medium carbon steel designed to be able to function in areas requiring greater strength and hardness. This steel possesses excellent size accuracy, concentricity, and straightness which together enable to minimize wear in high speed applications.
The tensile strength of 1045 hot-rolled steel bars is in the range of 570 MPa (a megapascal, a unit of measure equal to 1,000,000 pascals) to 700 MPa. A pascal is the amount of pressure generated by a mass of about 100g on a square meter under the earth's gravitational pull. Hot-rolled bars have a yield strength of 300MPa to 450MPa.
1045 Steel General Information. The 1045 steel plate product is often used to manufacture large sprockets and steel gears for the paper industry and other processing industries. Coal, Iron, rock, stone, gravel, and even cement are processed and transported every day using parts made from 1045.
1045 ASTM A108 CTI Color-Red This medium carbon steel is used for heat treating (quenching and tempering). Although it has only a fair response to conventional quenching, it is widely used where requirements are not too stringent.
Hard is a relative term. Most users start referring to hardened steels around 300BHn, all the way to 739BHn (roughly 32 to 65HRc). 1045 is produced in the 'soft' condition (16Hrc) so it can easily be machined. It is then hardened for greater strength -- the as-quenched hardness is greater than 55HRc.
AISI 1045 steel is a kind of medium carbon steel design need more intensity and hardness can function. The steel has excellent dimensional accuracy, concentricity and straightness, common to reduce wear in high speed applications. it can form turned, ground and polished, can be processing asymmetric finite deformation.
Atlas 1045 black round bar is supplied with max. dimensional tolerance on diameter of 1.5% (min. 0.4mm). Atlas 1045 cold drawn/turned round bar is supplied in tolerance h10 or h9. Atlas 1045 centreless ground round bar is supplied in tolerance h8 or better. Atlas 1045 square bar, hexagonal bar and flat bar are supplied in tolerance h11.

Anybody got a chart or where I can find a chart for specific rockwell hardness for tempering temps of 1045? Ive searched here and google with no luck. Its for a 1045 forging hammer I just finished but havent heat treated yet.
SAE-AISI 1045 steel is a carbon (non-alloy) steel formulated for primary forming into wrought products. 1045 is the designation in both the SAE and AISI systems for this material. G10450 is the UNS number. It can have a moderately high tensile strength among the wrought carbon or non-alloy steels in the database.
1045 would not have that much of edge holding ability compared to other steels as it only contains .45% carbon meaning that its max hardness is much softer compared to steels such as 1080,1094,etc.
hardness depends on steel carbon content and the hardenability of the steel. The maximum section size that will harden through to maximum surface hardness in oil is shown below Maximum Steel grade section size, in. 1045 0.250 5140 0.750 4140 1.5 4340 3.0 The commercially accepted range for surface hardness after tempering is 5 HRC points or 40 , 1045 steel brinell hardness
